ABOUT NEO TECH

An invitation to design the new Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki, Finland.

Located in the coastal district of Makasiiniranta, within Helsinki’s South Harbor and adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, the site holds significant cultural and historical value.

The project is conceived as an inclusive and democratic space, where contemporary architecture integrates harmoniously with Helsinki’s urban and maritime landscape.

AN EMOTIONAL AND SENSORY APPROACH

The design emphasizes accessibility, inviting the public to interact with the building as an extension of its surroundings.

The ground floor, galleries, and terraces are designed to be appropriated by visitors, encouraging open and intuitive use of the space.

ARCHITECTURE AS RITUAL

At the core of the museum’s concept lies flexibility and adaptability. The dynamic ground floor allows visitors to shape their own experiences through movable panels that create personalized spatial configurations. Terraces arranged around the central ramp provide settings for diverse activities, reinforcing the museum’s role as a place of public interaction.

A PROJECT ALIGNED WITH ITS CONTEXT

A defining feature of the design is the central staircase, Visible Exhibitions, which allows visitors to engage with art without entering the building or purchasing a ticket, guiding them toward the public rooftop. This design decision underscores the museum’s commitment to making art and knowledge accessible to all.

The museum accommodates a wide range of visitor needs by offering spaces where activities can be explored at different rhythms. Semi-public exhibitions coexist with areas for workshops, events, meetings, and a library, creating opportunities for shared artistic experiences and collective cultural expression.

Private exhibition areas provide 360-degree views of the surroundings through interior terraces and windows. Local services, accessible to everyone, support the economic sustainability of the complex, allowing access to the shop and restaurant without passing through the museum itself.
